Proposed NB Tax Increases Will Take Major Bite Out of Taxpayers Wallets

Author: Kevin Lacey 2015/11/27

HALIFAX, NS: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) says today’s release of the New Brunswick’s Strategic Program Review taxes too much and doesn’t go far enough to reduce government spending.

“The government is taxpayers wallets thinner, while keeping the government fat,” said Kevin Lacey, Atlantic Director of the CTF.

The largest proposed tax increase was a 2-percentage point increase in the HST. The CTF predicts this hike will cost average taxpayer about $271.40 to $457.50 more.

The CTF says the government should have been much bolder in proposing more budget cuts.

The amount of spending reductions dwarfs revenue increases. The maximum amount of money proposed in savings is $392 million compared to $531.5 million in new tax measures.

“For too long the government spent and spent, and now we see the result – increased taxes. We have to break this cycle,” added Lacey.

The CTF has proposed cutting handouts to businesses as one way to save money.
